So what is meant by "non traditional" media and advertising? Well to answer this question lets look at a few things.
1. What are traditional media outlets?
a) Television commercials, Radio, Print Advertising and direct mail.
b) Internet Advertising via banners and email blasts could now be considered traditional
2. What reaches consumers today?
a) Baby Boomers, older consumers, and many Gen X'ers still receive much of their advertising and content through
traditional outlets.
b) New consumers, Gen Y, tech saavy, and next gen consumers do NOT receive their content and adertising this way.
Below lists many of the characteristics of these consumers.
1) They go out of their way to not be advertised to yet at the same time want information on products, services and
content, but on their terms. They receive this via social networking, RSS, and other on demand or self managed
programs
2) They spend much of their time online, they are on sites like facebook, myspace, social networking, etc.
3) They want and get their content on demand with no commercials and are less exposed to traditional advertising
4) They are the fastest growing segment of consumers and certainly the customer of today and tomorrow
I will continue this in my next installment and discuss reaching the new consumer and the mistakes many companies are making in market segmentation and strategy.
